Orange breasted Fruiteater
Pterophanes cyanopterus
Mountains
This is a plump and vivid bird that can be found in the cloud forest of the western Andes. The male can be easily identified by its black head and orange breast. The identification of the female is more challenging. However, you can differentiate it from the female Green-and-black Fruiteater by looking for black feet and pale eyes, and from the female Golden-breasted Fruiteater by the unstreaked chin. This bird feeds on berries found in the mid-levels of the forest and is often spotted in pairs. Its distinctive vocalization includes high-pitched whistles that can be either short or long and drawn-out.
This species can be observed during our bird photography trips in Chocó Andino in Ecuador.
