Andean Cock of the Rock
The Andean Cock of the Rock belongs to the Cotingidae family and it is one of the iconic birds of the Andes. This species is fairly large, significantly larger and chunkier than a thrush. It is found in cloud forest at middle elevations, most often at a dawn display site where males make piglike squeals and jump and dance for females. The Andean Cock of the Rock sometimes is seen elsewhere in the forest, especially at fruiting trees.
Males can be either brilliant crimson or orange, always with black wings and broad silver tertials, orange legs, and puffy rounded crest. On the other hand, females are duller brown with a smaller crest and staring pale eye. This species nests on large rocks or cliff faces. The only similar species is Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, but there is no range overlap. You can enjoy it on Manu National Park tours.
